Description: Jesus is famous for saying that the path is narrow’. This is because the method is towards balance or equilibrium, where overthink and over-trying is as ineffective as doing nothing at all. In this way, the practise is defined most ambiguously in The Bhagavad Gita as defined by ‘the effort towards steadiness.’ In the Bhagavad Gita, we find the picture of the classic yogi sat in seclusion immersed in silent meditation, yet, we also have Arjuna the main protagonist of the story being encouraged to fight in the battle before him by Krishna (God). In which case, method, whilst it always involves mental and sensory discipline, does not find an obvious translation in our action in the world. For, instead of focusing on the action itself, it is rather our attitude to action that dictates our success with our method. The aim of practise is given as ‘abhyasa vairagyabhyam’, effort and non-attachment . For this reason, the path towards practice is a personal journey; involving an attempt to arrive at an elusive feeling. Here, we are searching for a way of relating to life with the active wish of awareness, whilst not being drawn into the distraction of focusing on particular outcome and goals which takes us away from this. Series 1: The Bhagavad Gita. Often taken to be a musty old book relevant to yoga teachers only; this book is set on a medieval battlefield, but one that is just as relevant to us now, engaged in our modern battle in the attempt to get what we want out of life. Instead, The Bhagavad Gita suggests that this attitude to life doesn’t work to produce what we really want; which is happiness found in peace, rather than achieving. The text suggests a radical change of perspective as to what we are, what life is about, and hence how to live it in order to achieve this newfound goal. This is called ‘yoga’ and is clearly elaborated on over the six episodes in this series. episode 1 is here: youtu.be/PKRZQRPfXmU episode 2 is here: youtu.be/cNZGBlJHg7g episode 3 is here: youtu.be/8DMWqWGJshg Episodes: 1.
