Basically it happened because Anita’s parents wanted to move away from civilization. They didn’t like the socialist government or the establishment that was there in the mid-50s. Exactly one year before Anita was born, they went away to live in the taiga. They chose a place to settle next to a river. The closest village was hundreds of miles away. They had spent 2 months looking for the perfect location before working together to build a house. It took them about 5 months. Obviously Anita didn’t go to school because there was no school to attend. Anita helped her parents throughout spring, autumn, and summer. There was a lot of household chores to do, and plenty of work in the garden, since of course the family grew all of their own food. In winter, she’d just play out in the open. Anita’s Dad often took her ice-fishing, and they’d also play hockey or build snow palaces, while Mom was cooking a nice hot meal for them. They had no neighbors, so it got a bit boring until Anita’s little sister was born. The two had a great time as teenagers together. At some point, their parents decided they were old enough to wander far beyond the vicinity of the house. The woods were a fascinating place. One summer, the girls built a tree house in the canopy of a great oak. That tree was one of a kind: so big and with plenty of thick branches to support a tree house. Anita and her sister spent a lot of nights up there. It was actually safer than sleeping in the house with their parents, as no predator could climb the tree. There were plenty of wild animals roaming near their normal house: wolves, bears, moose, and even musk oxen. Occasionally, Mom and Dad would make the girls learn to count or read, but Anita only mastered the alphabet by 16. Even then, she was only able to spell out the syllables, unlike her little sister who was more book-smart. Anita now suspects she had a congenital brain condition like dyslexia. When Anita was 24, her father was killed by a bear. He was just trying to protect the beehives that the bear wanted to destroy. Life got so much harder after Dad was gone, with no man in the house. But the women adapted after a couple years. Things were okay until eventually Mom died 20 years later. Anita and her sister could barely get by alone. After 10 more years, their house started rotting and they wondered where else they could go. They had both been hoping to see that civilization that their parents despised so much, maybe just for a day. But it was years later when they heard an unfamiliar monster roar in the woods. They peeked out from behind a bush to see people coming out of the monster. They said they were tourists. It was the first time in the women’s lives that they saw a car or a person who wasn’t family. Anita showed them their house and shared the story of their lives. The tourists found it very touching. When Anita explained they wanted to get out of there, they promised to come back with a larger car. It was difficult to abandon the home where Anita had spent almost 6 decades. Luckily, the government gave them a sturdy house in a remote village, and their new home felt very quiet and familiar. When they settled down, Anita learned there was a school in the nearest big village. She had always wished she could go to school, so why not make her dream come true? As soon as Anita got her ID, she went to the principal’s office. Of course she had her doubts even after the old woman explained the story of her life. The principal insisted a 57-year-old woman wouldn’t fit in with primary school pupils. But Anita just kept coming to the school, bringing presents for the principal. Eventually, she had no choice but to give in to Anita’s pleas. She said Anita was educated enough to study with 3-graders. Of course, her new schoolmates pointed fingers at her, but a few weeks later they got used to Anita and started treating her as their equal. Anita is 62 now and she’s in 7th grade. She invited her sister to come study with her, but her sister firmly refused. Apparently school was no place for old people. But Anita’s sure she’s just too shy to meet new friends! Anita loves studying. Her class is pretty small. There are only 4 students including Anita and they’re all good friends. They’ve been studying together for 4 years, after all! Anita’s teachers got used to her too, even though many of them are younger than her. Anita is an average student, but that’s fine! She doesn’t make plans for the future. She likes where she is now. The only thing she wants is to finish her education so she doesn’t die ignorant. #MyStory
