Fred and his parents have always been very close, without any secrets between them. At least, that's what he thought until recently. Also, they love traveling. Fred always feels thrilled to watch a mountain river roiling under a suspension bridge. It makes him imagine the rope structure breaking down and all of them fighting for their lives. Fred would definitely rush to rescue his Mom. She's a woman and as her son, he's obliged to protect her, right? But he used to wonder why such a fragile woman had no fear of heights at all. She really loved looking down. Once, the family left home for a whole week. They packed lots of food and warm clothes, and they had lots of fun camping. Fred didn't miss the hot and stuffy city at all. The only thing that bothered him was the weird or frightening sounds he could hear at night. Fred slept in a separate tent so he sometimes felt creeped out. But Mom and Dad had warned him not to disturb them. Back at home, Fred went out to play with other kids. Each of them had his own story to tell about his summer break, but most of these stories sounded dumb or even inappropriate to Fred. He had to sit through one of the boys spinning a yarn about his parents doing very tasteless stuff. It wasn't pleasant to hear at all, and Fred definitely didn't want to suspect his own parents of doing these nasty things. But then one day, Fred happened to come home from school early as some of the lessons got canceled. Mom didn't meet him at the door and he thought she was simply gone shopping or visiting a friend. But then Fred heard a weird noise from their room that startled him. There was rustling, then the voices of Mom and Dad whispering and laughing together. Fred knew they liked spending time alone to discuss adult matters, so he convinced himself it wasn't a big deal. However, those stories he'd heard from the kids in the yard were still haunting him. Then, Fred heard Mom shrieking and he froze, dumbfounded. What was even happening there? Curiosity overwhelmed him and he decided there was no harm in opening the door a crack and taking a peek. His Dad was standing upright holding Mom's legs over his shoulders. Mom was keeping her balance using just her arms. They were dressed up in fantastic outfits Fred had only seen in the city circus before. Suddenly, the door Fred was clinging to creaked, his Dad turned his startled face towards him, and then they were just gazing at each other in astonishment. Fred couldn't say a word until they finished their stunt and Mom leapt to her feet gracefully. Fred burst into applause. Mom and Dad looked confounded by his praise, but at the same time proud of keeping their skills after all these years. When they sat down for dinner later, Fred confronted them with questions: "Where did all your skills and outfits and your artistry come from?" And this was how he learned they used to work at the circus as aerial gymnasts when they were young. This was actually how they met each other. For several years, Mom and Dad toured in various cities together. Their audience loved them. The streets were decked with their posters. Every show was a sell-out. Mom showed Fred old photos featuring them soaring beneath the big top. This was a nostalgic evening. Mom even teared up a little. But three years into their marriage, they had a baby and Mom had to quit her favorite job in order to raise Fred. Dad had to quit circus as well since he couldn't risk his life anymore, plus the family needed a better source of income. He made good money working as a sales manager in a local store. Mom learned to be an accountant and, when Fred was old enough for kindergarten, found a job in a planning department. Fred felt so proud of them keeping their loving, trusting relationship throughout the years. And they kept their shared memories of their circus past and their job that they enjoyed doing together. Of course, Fred was a little hurt that they had been hiding their fascinating past from him. But mostly he just acted hurt. He could feel they'd become even closer. Fred even suggested that they return to their previous job but they just laughed it off, saying their muscles were long past their prime. They promised they'd perform for him in their full gear. Fred thinks living for one's family is the true happiness. He hopes he'll find this kind of love and he wishes everyone the same. #MyStory
