Tessa is the oldest child of three. One of her brothers is 15 now and the other one is 14. As they're all close in age, they had a lot of fun growing up, and their parents had to sleep with one eye open. Whenever they found something to do, they'd easily divide responsibilities between the three of them, and soon, work was in full swing. When they visited their Grandma in her village, all of her neighbors would lock their gates to make sure the trio didn't wreak havoc all over the place. Once, they decided Granny's sow deserved a walk. Who wants to stay locked up day and night? They procured a book called "A manual of animal husbandry", studied the ways of restraining an animal with a rope, and set their plan in motion. The pig was complacent at first. It walked out into the pen, sniffing and snorting peacefully. But that wasn't enough for the trio. They craved a particular vibe. And they came up with an idea to ride the piggy. Tessa was the first one to mount it but the pig didnβt even react. After Tessa made a few laps around the pen, she let her younger brother take her place. And, to kick it up a notch, they opened the gate and took their mount out to the road. Tessa's brother settled himself on the pig's back, grabbed the rope as if it were reins, and kicked his heels into the animal's sides. Terrified of the open space it had never seen before, the pig plunged forward with all its might. Tessa had put the other end of the rope around her arm and her brother was clinging to his end for dear life. The other brother was running after the pig trying to catch it by the tail. A second later, they were already on the other end of the street. Their neighbors were staring at them in utter confusion. The pig barely avoided a bike that was coming round the bend as it sped up, bedazzled. Tessa could no longer keep up with it so she fell into the soft dust. Now things got real. She couldn't free her hand from the coil of rope and her knees were getting smashed by the roadside rocks. Help caught up with them after the exhausted pig hit a dead end, foaming at the snout. The men rushed to help Tessa stand up. Her shorts were in tatters, her knees were covered in blood, and her arm was hanging limp in an unnatural position. Surely a memorable adventure! When the trio got a little older, they loved fooling around in Dad's workshop. They'd saw wood and plane boards and hammer together seedling tubs and craft boot racks. Tessa wielded a hammer like a seasoned carpenter. One day, they decided to craft a doghouse for Granny's mongrel. It looked so miserable in the rain, sitting next to a box he could barely fit in. They were very diligent about the project. They measured the wood and sanded it smooth and prepared the roof materials. It was going to be one splendid doghouse! They'd even apply a coat of wood finish. The only thing left to do was to assemble the pieces. Getting the walls together was easy. The entrance was padded with rubber so that the mongrel wouldn't get a splinter in its side. Then, they spent ages fiddling with the roof, trying to even out the slopes. To put it mildly, the boys weren't very smart about holding the roof in place and using the hammer with the right amount of force. Evidently Tessa had to take the lead and issue direct commands. She handed the hammer to the smarter of the brothers and held the board with her poor hand while watching for cracks inside the structure as the brother was hammering it in place. They were almost done with the roof when the boys got thoroughly bored. Plus, a crowd of local kids had come by and invited them to play basketball together. And that was when the unfortunate event of the summer happened. Tessa picked a particularly long nail to fix the central beam robustly in place. Just like before, she stuck her head inside the doghouse to make sure the beam didn't shift. Then she yelled: "Hammer it in!" Either her brother was startled by the loud scream or he just got distracted, but the next thing Tessa knew, she was screaming much louder. The huge nail pinned her hand to the doghouse. As soon as Grandpa saw what happened, he hurried to get a nail puller and gently release Tessa's hand from its wooden prison. It hurt so much. Tessa wanted to kill that boy. How dumb do you have to be to drive a nail through your own sister's hand?? The X-ray showed her bones were intact, at least. Over the next two weeks, she visited the hospital several times to dress the wound and get a whole bunch of vaccinations. Of course Tessa's brother was concerned about her, so much that he actually cried. Ever since then, she's extremely careful when working with her fellow carpenters. Or they might take her arm off next time! #MyStory
