She's a very outgoing and gullible girl, and it's played a dirty trick on her. She ended up becoming a mom to a baby who was not like the others since he drew his first breath. Anila's 20. Baby girls aren't very welcome in her country. Every family hopes for a son because he'll grow up to be a breadwinner and protector. A daughter, though, is a waste of resources. She's going to cost a lot to raise, only to be given away in marriage. And the bridegroom has to be paid to take her: this is called a dowry. There's even a law against disclosing an unborn baby's gender because many women terminate the pregnancy if it's a girl. Anila's parents, however, loved her and cared about her reputation. Once, Anila and her girlfriends were riding their bikes towards the main street, when suddenly four adult men came out of the woodwork. They might not have had anything nasty on their minds but Anila was freaked out by how persistent they were. She struggled to cycle faster but she just faceplanted into the dust. Her tunic was torn so she sneaked to her room through the backyard, wary of her watchful aunts. Her father learned about the incident anyway and scolded Anila for falling off her bike. She never risked riding far away from home again. One day, Dad came home smiling. He got paid for months of work, plus a bonus. He took Anila and her Mom for a seaside vacation. There they were, a family of ordinary middle-class people, traveling in the same train car with the rich. Anila was so happy! It had been her dream for so long. She was full of anticipation for something really special to happen. Anila's Dad chose northern Goa, the favorite resort of young people, because it was affordable. Of course she realized what his plan was. He wanted her to meet a successful businessman and start a family. Anila absolutely loved the tours of architectural landmarks, especially the many temples. Her journey to the place and just being there felt as if she was daydreaming. Everything looked like fantasy. Even the people seemed astoundingly beautiful and valiant. Her father stopped being the control freak he normally was, and Anila got to enjoy a small measure of freedom. Surrounded by the total prosperity and tranquility, her parents seemed to feel young again. Dad was showering Mom with signs of affections, and she looked flustered as she accepted his modest presents and flower bouquets. Occasionally, they'd go to a small, low-cost restaurant for dinner, leaving Anila immersed in her favorite pastime of watching the sea and admiring the crimson sunset. One of those evenings, a young man approached her. They hit it off immediately and their conversation took a fairly intimate turn. He invited her into his hotel room to try some exotic cocktail. Anila felt euphoric, as if he had dozed her with a magical potion. She recalled her father's admonitions but she just had this impulse to do the exact opposite, and the obvious happened. The guy then called her a taxi back to her own hotel. Anila got anxious for a moment, but when she came home and sat down, her anxiety evaporated⦠just like her boyfriend did. When she came to visit him next morning, she learned his room had only been booked for 3 days and he had left early in the morning. She never saw him again. Anila's pregnancy became apparent after a month. Dad noticed right away and made her confess the great crime she had committed. He sent her off to an aunt who lived in another town and told everyone Anila had moved in with the wealthy husband she'd met during her time in Goa. Anila's aunt really cared about her, and they had a great time together. Anila felt a pleasant excitement at the prospect of having a baby. But her big day turned out to be terrifying. The first frightening anomaly evident in the baby's appearance was his eyes. One of his eyes was dislocated to the right and the other eye, much smaller, was sitting close to his temple. He had no nose at all. But the scariest thing ever was his mouth! His upper jaw was the size of a grown man's jaw, with enormous teeth. His tiny lips couldn't cover it. The baby's skin had a blue sheen to it, completely unlike a real Indian's natural brown color. It was a horrible punishment to become a mother to this mutant child. Anila was torn between the feelings of disgust and pity. He only lived for three weeks before dying and leaving Anila scarred for life. She warns every young girl out there to be very, very careful about who they spend their time with. Her casual acquaintance might have had an unhealthy genetic background, and Anila was the one to pay the price. If you want to end up in a happy marriage with healthy kids, you'd do well to investigate your prospective partners. #MyStory
