Description: Inside an abandoned military base left empty for decades. HMS Wildfire rarely, if ever opened to the public HMS Wildfire was built in 1937 on the eve of the Second World War, and saw scattered use throughout the 20th century. originally constructed in 1937 in the midst of an imminent threat of war with Nazi Germany and the Axis powers, it was one of four underground protected naval bases in the UK. The other three were based in Plymouth, Portsmouth and Rosyth. The decision for the tunnels to be deep underground was made largely due to the threat of German bombing raids, keeping the line of command underground to prevent it being disrupted by aerial attacks. Primarily responsible for protecting ships, both military and cargo, leaving the Thames Estuary, there were once 50,000 people operating in and around the tunnels under Chatham, attempting to keep British boats as safe as possible. From there, the base was used for a number of different purposes - many of them to do with naval training, from radar operations to volunteer reserve forces. As recently as the 1980s, parts of the site were still under use, training Operations HQ staff responsible for centrally managing military operations. However, the use of the site left with it's name, as HMS Wildfire now resides in North London - and the Gillingham site has been totally abandoned since then.
