Description: Leonidas working on his handler awareness with the wheelchair. He is a service dog who has a hard time staying focused on public. He LOVES people and we can’t have him just rushing up to anyone he pleases. We do TONS of drills like this to keep him focused on his handler and the wheelchair. Notice trainer Courtney turns into him a few times to make sure he’s spatially aware of her. A dog that’s not paying attention would simply get bumped into, but Leonidas pivots around and adjusts his position to match Courtney. We will spend the next week inside doing drills like this, upping the distractions and making things harder for Leon before we ever take him in public. There is so much work to be done before that and so many tiny little interactions that we can clean up before hitting the streets. Dog training is not just some big “one and done” thing. It’s hundreds of tiny moments that all stack up. We will be addressing everything from Leon’s auto-sits to the way he comes in and out of the kennel. These tiny things play a role in the dogs state of mind and relationship with his handler. We are looking forward to helping this handsome guy become the absolute best version of himself. His handler really depends on him for the quality of her every day life, so we are excited to improve both of their lives together.
