First off the question why passengers and most flight crew enter from the left hand side of the aircraft. When you walk down the air bridge or up the stairs into an aircraft you almost always enter through the front or second left door usually called L1 or L2 Left. There are some exceptions such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 which often board through both the front and aft left hand doors using mobile staircases to speed up the boarding process. Pretty familiar with EasyJet and RyanAir for example. And some regional Turboprop Aircraft like the ATR 42 and 72 board through the aft left hand door only as often the forward part is for cargo loading. So we see that the door number can change from aircraft to aircraft but it is always on the left side of the aircraft which you enter from. The reason for this is due to many things in aviation related to maritime industry. Before the invention of the centralized rudder, many old ships were directed by steering oars or boards on the back right hand side of the ship. The term starboard which refers to the right side of the ship or aircraft comes from the old English word “steer-board” meaning the side from which the ship is steered. Because the ships were steered from the right or starboard side, the boat would dock on the left side for loading and unloading, hence the left is called the „Port side“. I’m guessing a few „A-ha moments“ right there. This tradition of loading on the left has continued into the era of flying boats where passengers come on board from the left hand side using the piers and ramps boats had used before until todays modern jet era. This also allows cargo and service vehicles to attach from the right hand side so that ground crew and refuellers can do their work without hundreds of passengers being too close to sensitive or potentially dangerous areas and equipment. The right hand doors can also be used for wheelchair access lifts if the aircraft is not connected to an air bridge. Nowadays many airports are built specifically for boarding from the left handside , sometimes with even two airbridges above each other to cater for the upper deck of the Airbus A380. Or to board first class and business separately from economy. Overtime airlines have established their before flight procedures around the left handside of their planes in order to welcome passengers entering through the forward left door. Even the cabin interior is set up to board from the left, on Easyjets Airbus A319 and A320 you don‘t board through the narrow galley kitchen on the right, you come from the wider entrance on the left. Just look out for that the next time you board an orange plane. .... Thank you very much for your time! I hope you enjoy this video! Wishing you all the best!
