Layers are stacked on top of each other and the blending modes determine how the layers react to each other. When starting out with Photoshop layers might appear to be difficult to understand. Once you've become a bit more accustomed with Photoshop you'll realise that layers are pretty straightforward. The top layer will be visible, depending on the opacity. You can also apply a mask to determine how much of the top layer is visible.
