Do you wake up in the middle of the night or have trouble falling asleep because of your anxiety? Maybe you’re going through a particularly difficult time in your life. Anxiety can be caused by a number of different things. Sometimes its as simple as getting into a healthy routine of getting enough sleep and actually eating breakfast in the morning than can help. If you’ve heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it’s true. But other times anxiety is a little more complicated. What happens with anxiety is we create a fear of what bad things could happen in the future. Now this is normal. Everyone has anxiety to some extent. It is actually one of the great things about our mind because what the mind does is, it is always on the lookout for negative occurrences and even possible positive outcomes. So Your brain might ask, well what if this bad thing happens, what if that horrible thing happens? At that point, the brain sends you signals, signals in the form of anxiety. Why? Well because the truth is, there are bad things that happen in the world and the brain sends us these signals so we can prepare ourselves for potentially negative outcomes. We create a fantasy, or a potential future occurrence in our mind and we play it out in the mind. And then like magic, the anxiety eventually subsides. Because we realize that whatever happens, we can handle it. It’s not as bad as we thought. We have the courage to overcome it. But wait, you may be asking why you still struggle with anxiety. Well that’s because these fantasies that the mind sends us are not pleasant. Sometimes they are pretty scary. It’s not so easy to just play out a horrible situation the mind. Most of the time, we will do whatever we can to avoid those thoughts. We suppress those signals from the mind. But this becomes counterintuitive, because what ends up happening is your brain, which is producing those anxiety provoking thoughts, is more likely to create stronger signals of anxiety. Your mind is thinking, well there is a possible danger I am trying to present to the conscious mind, which is what it should be doing. But sometimes we are so afraid of that message, that we continue to ignore it. So the mind thinks, well this danger must be much worse than I thought. So I will make sure you pay attention by sending much stronger signals of anxiety and send them more frequently until you pay attention. So you have to try harder and harder to escape from a ghost that keeps getting larger and larger. It’s not until you look at it that you realize that this massive monster chasing you is merely the shadow of a puppy who just wants to play. So what do you have to do? What can you do? Well that is why this meditation was created. You will be guided down into a deep relaxation. From there as you are relaxed, you will begin to bring to mind those fantasies that you have been avoiding. The images that the mind is trying to send you. Allow those thoughts to come forward. You know what they are. Then you watch them like you are watching a movie. Let the fantasy play out and see what comes out at the end. Yes it may be frightening to do this. But what happens at that point is you tell the part of the mind that is sending those anxiety signals, that you have enough strength courage to face that event. The anxiety will begin to subside. From there, you can just let go, relax, and have an amazing night sleep. You can continue to do this nightly until the anxiety no longer has that powerful hold over you. Positive affirmations will also be implemented to help you realize the inner strength and courage you have inside you to overcome anything.
