Sainz out of the race on lap one and Leclerc in the barrier and recovering to only 6th position. So, what exactly happened to both drivers and what does it mean in the title fight? First up Sainz. He had his off in qualifying, ending up in the wall in Rivazza in Q2. He tried to carry a bit too much speed into the corner, having turned in on the kerb, which was likely a little damp, and the rear of his car didnât want to stick. This was another mistake by Sainz, which cannot have done his confidence much good. Being able to predict what a car will do is so important to a driver, and when it doesnât grip when you expect it to, it makes you drive a little bit below the limit, and therefore slower. Now, Iâm not 100% on whether this spin was due to the kerb being damp or Carlos not predicting the balance of the Ferrari properly - either way the result was the same. Sainz then went on to have a good drive in the sprint, getting back up to 4th. However, his start for the Sunday race wasnât great, getting overtaken by Norris and then being in a position where he was wheel to wheel with Ricciardo. Riccardo was ahead going down to turn one, but Sainz was much more confident on the brakes - which you can often be when youâre on the outside (this is where a little lockup or a bit too much speed wonât cause too much of an issue, like it might if youâre on the inside of another car). â€Follow Driver61 on: †Instagram- @official_driver61 - bit.ly/D61Insta â€TikTok - @official_driver61 - bit.ly/D61TikTok †Follow Scott on: †Twitter - twitter.com/scottkmansell †Instagram - @official_driver61 - bit.ly/D61Insta #Formula1 #ImolaGP #Driver61
