Description: Catch Millennium Actress in theaters August 13 (subbed) and 19th (all new English dub)! For a complete list of theaters, visit Eleven Arts' webpage: elevenarts.net/titles/millennium-actress For tickets, go here: fathomevents.com/events/millennium-actress Be sure to stay tuned after the screening for a special commentary with producers Taro Maki and Masao Maruyama, where they reflect on making the film and Satoshi Kon's legacy. Millennium Actress shines as an evocative love letter to Japanese cinema of the 20th Century in its story of a legendary actress recounting her illustrious life and career tied together by her never-ending chase for love. In many ways, it’s a direct follow-up to Kon’s previous work, the influential thriller Perfect Blue—from their “film within a film” format to the relationship between admirer and idol. Both construct their female leads through various gazes. However, in that sense, the two represent opposite sides of the same coin--Perfect Blue taking a darker approach, while Millennium Actress offers a lighter side. In this video, we dive in to how both films use gaze as either a destructive or empowering force for their female leads, exemplifying one of the many features that made Satoshi Kon such a master filmmaker.
