When that failed you reached for an easier solution with a one-click LUT. Sometimes you could get good results this way but eventually LUTs would end up breaking your heart when shots didn't match. There are still fundamentals at play when trying to get the best colors out of your camera and crafting a look like the one you envision in your mind. But it's not easy. I understood this as an aspiring filmmaker and I struggled for years with muddy looking images. Either pushing too far or coming back with less than stellar results. There had to be an easier way. Long story short I've been a part of developing a revolutionary color grading tool that lets you literally click on parts of the image and change the color.
