Description: The first cyclonic storm of 2022 to emerge out of the Bay of Bengal will not make landfall after all. The cyclone is called Asani and is currently a severe cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal. But in the next 48 hours the Cyclone will recurve north-northwest and move away from Odisha Coast according to the Indian Meteorological Department. While the storm will not make landfall, it will lash Odisha with heavy rains from May 10-12. Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Bangladesh are also likely to see rains from May 11 onwards. Winds with speeds of 40-50 km/hr gusting up to 60 Km/hr are likely to hit Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. With severe cyclonic storm, Asani packing gale-force winds up to 120 km/hr. and moving towards the east coast bringing along heavy rain, the Odisha government planned the evacuation of people residing in four coastal districts. A distant warning signal has been hoisted in all ports in Odisha in view of the approaching severe cyclone. Around noon on May 9, the cyclone was 550 Kms east of Vishakapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and is moving at around 25 Km/hr. Kolkata, has already witnessed heavy rains and winds as a precursor cyclonic storm creating waterlogging across the city. At least two tourists drowned on May 8 at Mandarmani, West Bengal’s Purb Mednipur district. On May 7 Asani started as a deep depression over the South East of the Bay of Bengal and started moving towards the coast in the northwestwards direction. On May 8th, a cyclonic storm developed over the west-central Bay of Bengal. The same evening Cyclone Asani developed into a severe cyclonic storm.
