This painting technique is not new, I showed it years ago (Open Cup Pouring). What is new are the cups. Because you cut them open at the bottom, they still have a rim and sit firmly on the canvas. No paint comes out until you lift the cups. Paint with them and you will notice the difference if you are already familiar with the classic method.
