As of mid April, 2022, there is very little difference between the data both rings collect in measurements and send to the Oura app for viewing. Only daytime heart rate from the Gen 3 ring is new along with a special “Explore” tab with a few short videos and audio clips for meditation, breathing, sleeping, and basic understanding of the app. 2. All data collected and sent to the Oura app for both the Gen 2 and Gen 3 rings is saved and available for review. Accessing the Gen 3 ring data requires a monthly subscription (currently $5.99US) to unlock your data for anything older than the last three days. Data will continue to be recorded, but unaccessible after three days without an active subscription. 3. Several enhanced new features of the Gen 3 ring have been delayed. From the Company’s April 2022 update email: "...Period Prediction (Beta) for Android will begin rolling out in May 2022. This feature, which is designed to work for individuals who have natural temperature patterns in their menstrual cycle, automatically updates the predicted start date of their next period based on the body’s temperature shifts, getting smarter over time." "...Workout Heart Rate tracking for running, cycling, and walking will be released in June 2022, with more workouts to be added throughout the year...Our science and technology teams are now in the final stages of development and testing." "...We’ve been hard at work developing our Blood Oxygen sensing feature. Understanding variations in your overnight blood oxygen level, a measure of how well your body circulates and absorbs oxygen, will help you get an even more enhanced read on the quality of your nightly rest. So, if you haven’t purchased an Oura ring yet, I would recommend finding a Gen 2 on the secondary market (like eBay listed above) and activating it so you can have instant use and unlimited access to your data (there is no subscription requirement). If you love it, then consider upgrading to a Gen 3 ring with all the new features later in 2022. If you’ve bought a Gen 3 watch during the special upgrade opportunity last year, then you have a lifetime unlimited subscription to all your data. If you buy a Gen 3 ring now, you receive a free 6 month subscription but will be required to pay for a month-to-month subscription after that to have access to any of your data older than 3 days (plus all the other subscription only material).
