Description: Marcos Santander, University of Alabama Located under a mile of glacial ice near the South Pole is IceCube, the largest neutrino telescope in the world. IceCube detects high-energy neutrinos, elementary particles that can be produced in distant cosmic objects such as supernova remnants and active galactic nuclei powered by supermassive black holes. Pinpointing the neutrino sources will help answer the century-old question of the origin of cosmic rays, the highest energy particles known in the Universe. In addition, combining observations of neutrinos with those of photons and gravitational waves will enable a new area of multi-messenger astronomical studies.
