Description: Mother India came out as the remake of Mehboob Khan's earlier film Aurat released in 1940 i.e. during post-independent India. Making of Mother India started in 1953, owing to the success of Aan, the film was decided to be shot in color. Certain new elements like portraying the central character as an allegory of India - before and after independence, development of villages were incorporated. Most of the outdoor scenes were shot on real locations; in villages of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. Faredoon Irani beautifully captured scenes of rural India; wide horizon, farmers at work, silhouette etc. are among the highlights of the cinematography. It was scheduled to release on 15th August 1957, to coincide with India's tenth Independence day. However, due to some delay in final editing, it was released nearly two months later, 25th October 1957, during Diwali festivities. Since the film was made in color it didn't saw a simultaneous release throughout the country as color prints were in limited number. The film is epic for many reasons. After its release, a strong correlation can be seen in the increase of women-centric films. Many films blended with drama and melodrama got inspired from it. It set off the career of the actors who worked in it. An evergreen classic which is still popular to-date. Background Music from Pather Panchali (1955)
