Description: From diagnostics and treatment to surgery: the KUKA collaborative robot LBR Med becomes the medical assistant for various tasks in the healthcare sector. Medical product manufacturers can develop and approve a broader medical solution including LBR Med, as it is certified in accordance with the "CB certificate scheme". It features materials and finishes that adhere to medical regulations and, thanks to its Inside electrical Med flange, can handle various connections for external power supplies, digital inputs and outputs, and Ethernet connections. A revolutionary application with the KUKA LBR Med collaborative robot, winner of the KUKA Innovation Award 2020, was developed by a group of researchers at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna di Studi Universitari e Perfezionamento in Pisa. The researchers have designed an end effector, which uses high-intensity focused ultrasound technology to remove tumour tissue the size of a grain of rice, without leaving scars, without toxic effects on the patient, without anaesthesia, without hospitalisation and at a much lower cost than current robotic technologies. The medical product thus designed is able to follow and compensate for the movement due to the patient's breathing by means of image guidance and robot control. This guarantees precise treatment thanks to the presence of the robot and non-invasive treatment thanks to focused ultrasound.
