Description: Hard to believe it was some three years ago we last recorded with Max Gomez, walking around abandoned buildings at sunset, playing songs that are now classics in my mind's record player. When we recorded those, it was literally my first minutes knowing Max. We felt like instant friends, and we recorded a slice of magic that is hard to match. The results were clear by the audience reaction, too. With over half a million views on this John Hartford cover alone (youtu.be/vEzaVUwEBiU), people are drawn to Max's nonchalant style and mesmerizing picking patterns. Well, we're back, and this time with some of Max's hometown of Taos, New Mexico. This is from the same trip I made to see Esther Rose and Nick Hans (youtu.be/J1g-U4_EJxo). I was chasing rainbows, but managed to meet up with Max right before he took off for California. He was gracious enough to introduce us to the city, which he is evidently basically the mayor of. When I asked him if he knew any beautiful spots to play, he simply made a call to someone in the government, who promptly gave us the keys to the cities historic courthouse so Max could play a song. Everywhere we walked, folks would stop Max to say hello and catch up. "I went to middleschool with her," he'd say of random people we met at sandwich shops. That's just the way it goes, when you're really from a place. The mountains in the background, snow still on their peaks, made for a rather epic background to this classic blues standard, "Key to the Highway". As Max says, it has a rather definitive version performed by Big Bill Broonzy. More coming soon, as subsequently I went on quite a few adventures with my friend Max.
