This video shows one of the first steps in how I create my trompe l'oeil (fool the eye) illusion art. It demonstrates how keep from smearing charcoal and graphite into areas of my drawing that I want to keep white. IMPORTANT: Only use this technique when you want an extremely sharp edge between your subject and background. Masking techniques are normally used in watercolor and airbrush techniques but I found it works great with pencil drawing.
