If you memorize something is it the same as learning it? The goal of learning should not be memorization it should be understanding. We are increasing our knowledge base and knowledge and understanding should be the goal to learning. So I don't think that just straight memorization is the same as learning. So you may think that then you should not focus on memorization in the learning process and nothing is further from the truth. While memorization is not the same as learning it is a tool in the learning process. I tell people all the time that if you are an expert at something (let's say you are a 10 out of 10) and a 1 is where you don't know anything about it. Memory training or memorizing won't get you from a 1 to a 10 in the learning process. However, memorizing or the ability to memorize will get you from a 1 to a 7 very rapidly. You still have to understand it and comprehend it but memory training or the ability to memorize can accelerate the learning process.
