(Possibly, And Here's Why) Can you build muscle optimally by using a "gaintain"/"maingain" approach where you eat at maintenance calories rather than in a calorie surplus? Can you build muscle without a calorie surplus? That's what we're discussing in today's video. The idea that you can build muscle at maintenance calories has been a fairly popular topic as of late. The issue I see is that it tends to get over-simplified into a simple black or white answer. In reality, it depends on the individual in terms of their existing body fat percentage, and it depends on what is specifically meant by "gaintain" or "maingain", whether that means to literally eat your exact maintenance calories, or to eat in a small calorie surplus of around 100-300 above maintenance. In this video I break the subject down step by step and explain who should gaintain/maingain, who should simply eat in a basic calorie surplus and how many calories you need to gain muscle. I also outline an alternative approach you can use to build muscle without fat (or at least, build muscle and stay lean overall) that involves shorter bulking and cutting cycles as opposed to longer ones. If you want to gain muscle, not fat, then make sure to watch this video and drop a comment letting me know your thoughts.
