She tears up thinking about her time as a super model, looking drop-dead gorgeous and working for a top modeling agency. When Becca turned eighteen, she was looking at a life of success. And the person to thank for those amazing opportunities was her beloved uncle. He's the brother of Becca's mom, who had her after breaking up with her father and then left the country in search of a new love. Becca's uncle pretty much raised her. He was convinced she was destined for the spotlight. He cared so much about her he left his wife when she argued he was getting too invested in his niece. He seemed to be pouring all of his unspent paternal feelings into Becca as he never had children of his own. One day, a beauty contest for college students was announced in Becca's town. The winner was supposed to receive a prize of her choice: either 3000 dollars or a photo op with a hyped-up photographer that would look really good in her future modeling portfolio. Uncle came home in high spirits and claimed Becca had to participate. He said this was her crowning moment. They spent the next day shopping for clothes and jewelry. They also visited a stylist, who promised to make a real stunner out of Becca. Becca ended up winning the contest. Upon her uncle's advice, she chose the photo op over the money. He said this prize was going to kickstart her career and the money was a drop in the bucket. Becca had a fascinating portfolio for a girl with no modeling experience now. Just a few days later, Becca had her first casting. They needed a girl for a miraculous eyebrow care product advertisement. She went all out preparing for the casting, and her victory was obvious from the start. Her uncle was looking at her with utter admiration as he hugged her and said: "You're sure to win. From this moment on, you're a real model, remember this!" Becca starred in the advertisement and got her first 400 dollars as payment. This felt like a ton of money for just 3 hours of filming. After that first successful gig, she got invitation after invitation. 3 weeks of irregular work later, she was offered tenure at a modeling agency. The contract terms were very decent and she quickly outshone all other girls. Her new life was like a fairy tale. Even more opportunities opened up after she left her first modeling agency for a high-end New-York-based one some years later. During her time as a model, Becca purchased a Manhattan apartment that was small but really comfortable, and a splendid pink Porsche 911. She also traveled all over the world, which was the most exciting element of her new life. Sometimes, she would stand on the balcony of her five-star hotel and feel overwhelmed with gratitude for her benefactor β her uncle who had encouraged her to get off the ground and live the dream. Becca realized the power of her beauty but she never put on airs. Uncle had always warned her against it. He said she should always stay respectful of those around her. Tragedy struck out of the blue. Becca's uncle died due to a foolish coincidence. He hadn't been to a doctor for years and he was never keen on conventional medicine. Over the years, he had developed a grave illness that starts out without any symptoms. By the time the person realizes there's something wrong with them and goes for a medical check-up, it can already be too late for treatment. Having lost the only person she could trust and rely on, Becca was crushed with despair. She was deeply depressed for a month after his funeral. She didn't leave her house, didn't pick up her phone, didn't take lucrative job opportunities. When she recovered somewhat, she was horrified to realize she had gained over 60 pounds! This just made her mental issues worse. She was comfort-eating to cope with the abrupt downfall of her modeling career now. Extra pounds kept adding up. Becca was terrified to look in the mirror but she couldn't help herself. She typically ordered takeout so she didn't even need to leave her house. She always kept a dish full of buns and donuts on her table. Pizza marked the start of her day, and rotisserie chicken or turkey saw her off to bed. She ate her last meal at midnight and had breakfast at the first light of dawn. Even during this short break, she never missed the chance to snack on a piece of cake. In five years of unhinged eating, Becca reached 680 pounds! Her life feels like a countdown to the bitter end, and she's going downhill much faster than she was going up when she started her modeling career. Becca's hoping to find a way to lose around 400 pounds, just enough to walk normally and take care of herself. Telling her story here has been the first step to recovery.
