Description: Coastal environments, like wetlands and salt marshes, are critically important in protecting us from climate change, yet they’re historically under-researched. In this new video, two Boston University earth and environment scientists explain why these areas need protecting and demonstrate their efforts to empower citizen scientists to measure the carbon dioxide stored in New England’s coastline. "These coastal blue carbon ecosystems, as we call them, make up a really, really small percent of the earth and ocean surface," explains Amanda Vieillard, a postdoctoral research associate. "But, they actually store about 50%, we think, of total ocean carbon."
