Description: Your sleep problems are likely a result of you being too wired and amped up with your sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for fight or flight. We want to activate your parasympathetic nervous system, for rest and digest, close to bed. First, use dimmer and warmer color lights at night. Also preferentially use floor lamps or lower lights rather than overhead lights. This is because bright and overhead lights suppress melatonin release based on receptor sensitivity and positioning in your retina. Second, cool your body in preparation for sleep. Set your A/C a few degrees cooler or use a fan. Third, avoid backlit devices like your phone, tablet, computer, or TV. This is one of the hardest ones to do. If you cannot put your devices away, dim the screens, shift the color temperature warmer, and use blue light blocking glasses. Fourth, eliminate all light from your bedroom. I recommend using blackout curtains or a sleep mask. Fifth, sounds can either wake you up or hinder your sleep quality, even if you don’t wake up.
