Description: Smokey Robinson wrote the No. 1 hit "My Guy" for singer Mary Wells during her short but storied career at Motown Records. It all started when Wells was a teenager. She met Motown CEO Berry Gordy at a nightclub and tried to pitch him a song she had written for another artist. That song — "Bye Bye Baby" — would become her own debut and her first hit single at Motown. Shortly after, she teamed up with Robinson, who wrote her a number of Calypso-inspired tunes fashioned after the style and sound of Robinson's pal Harry Belafonte. In 1964, they struck gold with what would become Wells' signature song, the world-famous hit "My Guy." It was their last collaboration. A year later, Wells left Motown and signed with 20th Century Fox. Here's the full story behind the Smokey Robinson lyrics for "My Guy."
