Until recently, the WiiWatch 2 app was the stock app designed for tethered connection within the firmware of all Android smartwatches. Since the advent of new biometric sensors in the latest Android 9 and 10 watches for Blood Oxygen monitoring and sleep tracking, a new tethering app has emerged to show this information on a phone. The new app is named GaoFit, and, unfortunately, it is extremely limited (as you will learn in today’s overview video). The former WiiWatch 2 app had matured to include some practical features, including: 1. File transfers from your phone directly to your watch over Bluetooth 2. Remote text field entry from your phone without using the tiny keyboard on your watch These features are missing from the GaoFit app. Unfortunately, you do not have a choice to pair with either WiiWatch 2 or GaoFit. You are forced to use the one recommended (and coded in the firmware of the watch for pairing). When you scan the QR code for the tethering app that you access on your smartwatch, you will find out which one you need. It is recommended you download the appropriate app to your phone from the Google Play Store on your phone rather than via the scanned QR Code as all apps on the Play Store have been checked for viruses, etc. and determined to be clean. Are there alternatives to these Wiitee based tethering apps? Well, yes and no. There's a work around pair of apps (one for the phone and one for the watch) named "WatchDroid" that some folks use for basic tethering, but it doesn't transfer over the fitness or health data. For Social Media apps and mirroring, you can generally download the Android apps directly on the watch like you do on your phone. Using the same account for Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Gmail, etc., you can instantly switch between your phone and watch for content. The same applies to browsers like Chrome or Firefox, as long as your watch is connected to the Internet via WiFi or cellular (separate SIM in the watch). You can even tether your watch to your phone if you put your phone in WiFi hotspot mode, so you have tremendous capabilities with your smartwatch directly that go beyond the limited connectivity of the WiiWatch 2 or GaoFit apps.
