Description: This video explains about the basics of engine over run. A detailed video animation will be uploaded later. As you all know, the engine has a limited maximum speed at which it operates. But if we abuse the vehicle, the engine speed rises beyond the limited maximum speed. This phenomenon of engine crossing over its limited maximum speed is called engine over run. Case of engine over run: while driving down hill, if the driver is not applying the brake properly to reduce the speed of the vehicle and on the other hand if the driver is selecting a lower gear to reduce the speed, chances of engine over run is higher. In this case the wheels will be rotating at a higher speed than the power produced by the engine. As there is a mechanical linkage between wheels and engine, the wheels will try to push the engine proportional to the speed of the wheels; this increases the speed of the engine and crosses the engines limited speed, resulting in engine over run. Various failures on engine that can occur due to engine over run: 1. Push road bend or crack. 2. Valve crack. 3. Tappet crack. 4. Piston stamping by valves. 5. Engine block crack.
