That means becoming more conscious of positioning chord shapes to harmonise and serve the melody, both spatially and by ear. We also learn how to modify one string of these simple shapes to accommodate melodic tones such as the 9th, 11th and 13th, giving us accessible shapes to target every possible melodic tone up the fretboard in a three part harmony. Ultimately, this is about equipping ourselves with more voices to support any melody we might be called upon to accompany.
