December 11th, 1981. Destructive punching Heavyweights; “Black Destroyer” Earnie Shavers and rising contender Jeff Sims collided in the undercard of the Muhammad Ali vs Trevor Berbick main event billed as “Drama in Bahama” where the Greatest of All Time fought in his last career bout before retiring with a final record of 56(37)-5 at 39 years of age. This event took place in the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre in Nassau, Bahamas due to the fact that no American States would license the main event after the devastating outcome of Ali’s last fight against a prime Larry Holmes one year earlier where Ali was stopped in his corner after 10 one sided rounds. Interestingly, Sims was Ali’s sparring partner during his training camp and cut his lip during a sparring session. Prefight records; Shavers 63(60)-10-1, Sims 12(12)-2. Entering the bout, the 12 year veteran Earnie had knockout triumphs over the likes of Jimmy Ellis, Jimmy Young, Ken Norton & Tiger Williams while the 27 year old Jeff had no notable wins going into the fight. However, he was considered to be a promising young fighter who boasted an amazing 100% KO ratio with 6 of his 12 knockout wins occurred in the first round and 4 in the second. In the opening round, Shavers established his jab early and applied forward pressure with caution but at about the 1.25 mark he was decked after walking into a pulverizing right hand by Sims who was constantly on his backfoot to avoid being pinned on the ropes and waited for the opportunity to connect with his powerful right. A rather slow count was administered by the referee, which Earnie took advantage of but still got up wobbly thus Jeff wasted no time detonating bombs on the seasoned albeit past best Shavers who made it to the bell. Both started off round 2 cautiously looking for openings for the most part till the last 45 seconds when Sims shoved Earnie to the ropes while they were in a clinch, and unloaded with fusillades of shots upstairs and downstairs but the ever resilient Shavers somehow survived yet another near knockout in 6 minutes. In round 3, Earnie endured more thunder but managed to return fire during the final minute as Jeff began to tire. For about 2 minutes 50 seconds in round 4, both fighters had their moments but Sims arguably did better particularly with body punches. With about 8 seconds left in the round, Earnie landed a big right hand followed by a barrage of blows ending with a right hand downstairs to even up the knockdown score. Jeff was visibly very badly shaken as he was helped by the referee back to his corner after the bell. From the moment the bell sounded to begin round 5, Sims’ legs were very unsteady due to the knockdown from the previous round thus Shavers carefully looked and seized the opportunity to go for the finish; connecting with a big right that had Jeff Sims flailing from one corner to another across the ring, coupled with bombardments to the body and head that were mostly unanswered which prompted the referee to stop the merciless assault. It was a stunning win for Earnie Shavers who was nearly decimated in the early goings but with tremendous determination and his unparalleled punching power, he overcame Jeff Sims’ early thunder to achieve a huge victory in the undercard of Muhammad Ali’s 61st and final professional fight. This fight echos the likes of the Black Destroyer’s triumphs over the likes of Jimmy Ellis and Tiger Williams where he came back from the brink of being knocked out to secure his own knockout. The rest of the undercard featured the likes of Thomas Hearns, Eddie Musfafa Muhammad, Greg Page & Pete McIntyre who all won their fights. Hope you guys enjoy this exciting albeit underrated explosion-filled slugfest. Be sure to SUBSCRIBE, stay safe, keep punching and ENJOY your holiday
