It ends with a solution to make your trip a bit more comfortable and enjoyable. If there is one engine running, it is the APU, the Auxillary Power Unit. This is a small turbine engine which is normally mounted in the tail and it provides electrical power during the preflight and it also provides pressurized air for the air conditioning and heating system. Nowadays, a lot of company’s ( and sometimes even airports) have restricted the use of APU until a specific time. This is done due to the relatively high fuel consumption and noise. For the people who want to know, the apu uses around 109 kg of fuel per hour. This means that within these company’s or airports, under normal circumstances, the apu may only be operated from the moment the loadsheet arrives. Until that time there is a random uncontrolled temperature in the cabin, which can be freezing cold or sauna hot.
