I am able to make a solid bar from just chains pieces but the material is not fully clean. I would not attempt to make a blade out of chainsaw damascus steel only as even though it looks to be hardanable at the same temperatures of 1070 it's not as homogeneous so I'd fear the presence of weak spots.
