Description: This dance is a Bharatanatyam collaboration depicting Ardhanareeshwara. Ardhanareeshwara, “the lord who is half woman,” is the half male/female form of the Hindu god Siva and his consort Parvati. Ardhanareeshwara represents the balancing of opposites to create harmony. This piece contrasts the masculine (Siva) and female (Parvati) aspects of Aardhanareshwara, and also depicts how one-half complements the other. Throughout the song, one dancer (Stuti) takes on the role of Siva , and the other (Anugraha) of Parvati. Siva’s movements are bold, and Parvati’s movements are gentle and full of grace , to highlight the contrast between Siva’s tandav dance of destruction and Parvati’s lasya dance of creation.
