Another incredible ambiguous object illusion by mathematician Kokichi Sugihara of Meiji University in Japan, the inventor of this illusion and art form. 👉🏻 Lenticular Invisibility: this thin acrylic sheet is comprised of tiny cylindrical lenses which can allow images to be “out of focus” along one dimension which blurs thin images and hides them. 👉🏻 Automated Lenticular Display: motion animation lenticular postcard with magnetic pendulum rocking display. The swinging is maintained by a simple magnetic kicking circuit that pushes a magnet in the bottom of the pendulum until the AAA battery runs down in a few weeks. 👉🏻 Pendulum Snake: 15 independent swinging pendulums, each with a slightly longer period than the one to its left side, create mesmerizing wave patterns. As the pendulums get further out of phase with each other the waves become shorter and faster. 👉🏻 Liquid Xenon Rapid Phase Change: this small sealed vial contains pure xenon gas at very high pressure- 65 atmospheres! When cooled to 16C (61F) the xenon gas undergoes a rapid phase change to liquid as seen here when the ampule is put in contact with the tip of an icicle. 👉🏻 Birefringence in Calcite: the speed of light in a calcite crystal depends on polarization- the refractive index is different depending on the polarization orientation of the light transmitted through it. 👉🏻 Precession of a Gyroscope: in defiance of gravity this gyroscope is supported only at one end. The physics and vector nature of angular momentum! 👉🏻 Brass Balance Bird: weighted wing tips create a center of mass below the bird's beak- making a system in stable equilibrium. No magnets! 👉🏻 Color Gradient Magnetic Film: making the invisible visible and revealing the hidden beauty of the physics in our everyday world. 👉🏻 Andrew's Space Wheel: kinetic art desk toy from the 70s- the rotor will stay in motion for weeks, until the hidden 9V battery is depleted. 👉🏻 Tautochrone Curve: a cycloid curve which has the special property that the time it takes for an object to slide to the bottom of it under gravity is the same no matter how high it starts up the curve. Also, the time it takes is always equal to pi times the square root of the cycloid radius divided by g. 👉🏻 Pendulum Snake- one of my favorite exhibits at @exploratorium: ten swinging spheres, the first has a frequency of 15 swings per 30 seconds, the second has 16 in the same time, the third has 17, up to the tenth with 24 swings per 30 seconds. Note that for a pendulum the frequency of oscillation depends on the square root of its length. 👉🏻 Neon Plasma Glassware: serve up a platter of plasma! These double walled glass mugs glow orange and blue from the excitation spectrum of neon gas at low pressure.
