Description: Hi Everyone :) Welcome back! I get asked often: "Where did you get all this stuff?" My goal is to share the real magic of science and physics- and to this end I will update here (and in my store) suggestions on where to get some of these toys, kinetic art pieces, and scientific curiosities for yourself. Buy physicsfun toys on : bit.ly/2MOjFET Follow on Instagram : instagram.com/physicsfun This video contains : 0:03 Element 10, Neon: a pure sample of the famous noble gas in a glass ampule encased within a lucite cube. But how can we know that the glass tube is actually filled with neon gas? If the sample is brought near the 50,000 Volt high frequency electric field of a miniature Tesla coil, the gas will glow with the characteristic orange light from the electron energy transitions specific only to neon. 1:03 Marangoni Propulsion Boat: this vintage toy boat is propelled by a difference in surface tension between water and isopropyl alcohol (contents of brown bottle). This very light weight aluminum boat has a basin where alcohol is added to a cotton string- the string feeds through a hole to a notch in the rear of the boat and wicking action draws the alcohol down to the water surface. Fluids will flow away from regions of lower surface tension (Marangoni Effect) and the isopropyl alcohol mixes with the water at the stern of the boat creating a gradient of surface tension which pushes the boat forward until the alcohol is drained from the boat. I was lucky to find this vintage boat, made in London with a patent date of 1955! 1:49 Pop-Pop Boat: a favorite in my collection- a birthday candle powered, super simple steam engine named after the sound it makes when operating. The engine is just a metal box, heated by the candle, with two pipes coming out of it. 2:34 Franklin's Bells: the styrofoam bead is covered in conductive paint allowing transfer of static electric charge from one penny to the other. The white cylinder is a statically charged piece of PVC pipe which induces a charge on the penny by repelling the electrons in the copper to the inside of the container. When the bead contacts the penny charge is transferred to it- now the bead and penny have the same charge and the bead is repelled to the other penny and the process repeats. 2:52 Electrostatic Motor 3:07 Electrostatic Levitation 3:27 Handheld Van de Graaf Generator 3:44 Magnetic Tractor: special configuration of magnetic poles captures a dipole magnet without contact. Only works in 2D but cool nonetheless! 4:06 Impossible Caged Golf Ball 4:30 Impossible Pipe Elbows 4:41 Impossible Bottle with Corkscrew: this beautiful work of art by @dp.fumagalli was created with clever engineering and expert craftwork. 5:37 Spark Science 6:32 Sparkler Freeze Frame 7:20 Penrose Tiling Puzzle: a challenging puzzle with pieces that come in only two shapes. The physicist and mathematician, Sir Roger Penrose, famous for his contributions to General Relativity, also discovered tessellations (tilings) that are aperiodic even though the two tile types are regularly shaped polygons. If one tries to shift a part of a Penrose tiling, the shifted part will not align or match up with any other part of the same tiling- all the way out to infinity! This puzzle, entitled “Perplexing Poultry”, uses polygons modified into crazy looking birds such that the tiles can only connect in specific ways to ensure the non-repetitive nature of the Penrose tiling structure. Shown here is one way these two tile types will fill the plane. 8:54 BONUS CLIP Background music by : 1) Happy Life by FREDJI soundcloud.com/fredjimusic facebook.com/fredjimusic Music promoted by Audio Library youtu.be/u4PI5p5bI9k 2)Fragments - AERØHEAD soundcloud.com/aerohead Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: bit.ly/al-fragments Music promoted by Audio Library youtu.be/O7PzeUTESAA #physicsfun
