Description: Here’s a short set we like to do to teach a few things: Stroke Count Awareness Kick Count Awareness 15 meter Breakout Awareness Front End Loading of Each Length Since this was the first time this swimmer has tried it, we allowed him to use fins (which always helps). Have the swimmer start with a comfortable number of dolphins, and then count the strokes taken until they reach the other end. That number is now the goal. On each length, the swimmer must ADD ONE dolphin kick, but is not allowed to go over the total number of kicks and strokes from the first 25. Have the swimmer continue adding kicks and taking away strokes until they’ve passed the 15 meter mark... then start again. This is a simple progression that has many teaching components involved and the swimmers will get better at it the more they do it. Ultimately, it’s about engaging the athlete in thought during a fairly simple set.
