Description: The Hays Code was a system of self-censorship that Hollywood subjected itself to from 1934 to 1968, in an attempt to stave off legislative censorship by the government. In that limited sense, the Hays Code served its purpose, but some would argue that it did even more damage to artistic expression than the government was prepared to do.
