Description: Collocations are an important part of English, including in writing. The IELTS and TOEFL writing section assesses your use of collocations as part of your vocabulary score (Lexical Resource). It is therefore important to know how to combine words correctly and appropriately. For example, what are the differences in meaning between in hand, on hand, and at hand? In this video, we look at these collocations as well as 10 more, with explanations of meaning and sample sentences. We also include more examples of collocations for you to look up on your own. Some of the collocations you will see in this video: in advance (of), in line (with), in turn, in essence, in general, in particular, in effect, in theory, in practice, in all likelihood, in common (with), in succession, in a row, and many more. Note: the collocations we look at can and should be used in your formal writing. Look for the survey card at the top of the screen.
