Description: Hello #Sundari this video is sponsored by #KOQAL koqal.com Instagram instagram.com/koqalofficial facebook facebook.com/KOQAL Youtube youtube.com/channel/UC7vOqSvmuIK3Kgprl4B5v8w Welcome to in my 30s a series where we talk abut everything to do with turning 30 and the life after and in today’s video we will focus Retinol. So what the hell is retinol? Well, retinoids are synthetic Topical vitamin A–based drugs, they increase your skin cell turnover, which in turn reduce photoaging, fine lines and aging spots. But Retinoids are a broad terms. Tretinoin is the big daddy and is the strongest our of all of then, Its lighter versions are retinol, adapalene (Differin), tazarotene, retinyl palmitate, and more, keep in mind that every retinol is not the same strength, some are weaker than the others, can give slower results but also with the same logic have milder side effects. We will circle back to this in the end of the video. So in essence, after hitting 30, your skin slows down its skin cell turnover from 28 days to 50 or even 70 days which leads to your face looking dry and dull. So an ingredients such a retinol pushes your skin to turnover your skin cells faster so as to keep up with the 28 day cycle. Why do people use it? Many people also go towards tretinoin because it is truly cheap and convenient to use. Your skincare routine goes from all these crazy 5 to ten step trending routine to just a simple 3 step process that fits a lot of people lifestyle, it also seems to help with a lot of issues at the same time so is a great way of tackling multiple skin issues at the same time. I got to know about tretinoin by this video by jeniffer myers, and I was so excited about trying it but I didn’t go forward with it because even if it was easy, I realized that a lot of my reviews are skincare based so I wont be able to do any honest reviews if I use retinol and then my skin is amazing anyway. The problem. I have seen a growing crescendo of tretinoin and simple, scientifically proven chemical based recommendations growing massively in the recent year and the problem that I personally find in that is that no one is talking about its side effects. Remember when we talked about strength of retinoids? Well whatever I am about to tell you is not applicable to all retinols because they can be milder than their counterparts, so keep that in mind. So lets talk about the side effects of retinols and why it isn’t the one size fits all for everyone 1. sensitive skin conditions like rosacea cannot tolerate really strong topicals like retinols, so try to consult a dermatologist before starting anything. 2. First time, retinol users can experience, redness, dryness, and peeling. Something that doesn’t seem like a big deal for many but if you have sensitive skin to begin with, start using retinol by watching videos online, you might find yourself doubting your decision to start using it in the first place. Some also may need to adjust the strength of the retinol to fit their skin, which can react to a strong retinol to begin with, so there is room for trial and error here. 3. Birth defects - there was a huge scare about vitamin a derived products being consumed in pregnancy, Oral consumption of isotretinoin has been clearly shown to produce birth defects BUT and this is a huge point, even the newest test conducted have found that topically applied retinol can not effect much, poor absorption and the small surface area the retinoids were applied to would mean the levels in the blood would be too low to harm the developing child. But experts still suggest pregnant women avoid applying vitamin A-based formulations to their skin if they are trying to conceive, during pregnancy and sometime even while breastfeeding. 4.The sunscreen – If you hate applying sunscreen, ironically you need the retinol more because of the damage you are doing to your skin but if you truly hate it then you wont be able to follow the sunscreen application diligently. Retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so it’s important to use sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day — even when it looks cloudy. So if you are someone who just can not make that commitment, you need to rethink that retinol decision. Since I am not a dermatologist, I would highly urge you to go speak to one before starting any form of “science backed” ingredient. Dermats online might make content for a large audience but its just that, content, like what I am doing. And content is not equal to in person appointments where the professional can understand your conditions and then diagnose you or recommend you specific ingredients for your needs. So please, question everything! Read more about this and talk to an actual doctor before starting anything. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3114665 accp1.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0091270011429566 #retinol
