Description: This is an arrangement of "Attack," Masahiro Kajiwara's battle theme from Gainax's 1993 simulation game Princess Maker 2. I have arranged the song for native playback on SNES hardware, and the audio was recorded directly from a launch-model SNES deck. You'd never expect it from a game called Princess Maker, but this series knows how to go hard on a soundtrack. Kajiwara is a miracle worker - I don't think I've ever heard anyone else who could make an FM chip scream the way he did in his games. When I was doing this, I was looking to see how far I could get using a pair of distorted square waves to simulate a guitar-like sound in order to save memory. (The "guitar" sample is only 370 bytes before being compressed to .brr!) By gradually detuning them at certain times, I was also able to mimic a PWM-like effect to create a sustained warble that works nicely with the SNES's surround sound effect that I used just for the guitars. I thought that was pretty neat. The video was taken from my playthrough of the IBM-PC version of Princess Maker 2. If you'd like to see it, you can find it at youtu.be/ZQxQonETN-4 I also did the battle theme from Princess Maker 3: youtu.be/HXf8rQzk6VE If you'd like to check out any of my other arrangements, you can find the playlist at youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3gSj_kh1fHueSujqQR8xQQ84DWIjrU4F _____________ NintendoComplete (nintendocomplete.com/) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games!
