I had been doing a lot of touring with Snarky Puppy that year and I was inspired to embrace sounds that I had avoided on my previous recordings. I was imagining new music that was louder, funkier, still subtly complex, but also unpretentious. Instead of tiptoeing the line between acoustic and electric as I often have in the past I was now prepared to go all-in with electric instruments and effects. I didn’t care if people knew that a particular sound was being made by a violin anymore. I had to change some things in my mind to allow myself to hear the music. It was time to get dirty.
