Baked into its core gameplay mechanic, the titular Wind Waker, is a design that reminds the player at all turns of their own unimportance in a world where the gods either don't care or actively hate mortals. So that's fun. This is the latest in our ongoing series, A Link to the Plot, in which we look at how each Zelda game's unique gameplay mechanic informs its story. In this case, the power to move the wind (and, therefore, the frustration of constantly being buffeted by the wind and blown off-course) has inspired a story about how the world is out to get Link. The weather, and by extention, pretty much everything both above and below the Great Sea, exist to make Link's life more difficult, and unlike other Zelda protagonists, this Link has to work twice as hard to gain any kind of advantage over his enemies. The moral of the story, weirdly, is that the real way to thrive and get your way in a world ruled by uncaring gods is to hustle for coin. Get rich or die trying. What a weird message for what is generally thought of as the most child-friendly Zelda game!
