Description: Minecraft is well known as one of the world's most widely loved child-friendly building games. Used right, the game from Mojang and current owner Microsoft is an invaluable educational tool. It's a shame, then, that Minecraft is rated Adult-Only in South Korea, and children are banned from playing the game online. The reasoning for this is an unusual law named the Youth Protection Prevention Act, known more widely as the Cinderella Law, which involves preventing children from playing games after midnight. You've probably already spotted a few flaws in this plan. The Cinderella Law doesn't work for single-player, offline games. It also doesn't work for mobile games, and is focused solely on PC and console games. What's more, because it's an absolute pain to set up servers to differentiate between players based on age and restrict access to those under the age of nineteen, a lot of companies simply won't let children play games online. Untile recently, Minecraft was spared this treatment, but as Microsoft updated the way the game is registered, moving from using Mojang accounts to using Microsoft accounts, younger players in South Korea have been abandonned by the company. The ministers responsible for the Cinderella Law are quick to blame Microsoft for the problem, but debates currently rage as to whether the law should be replaced with something a little less arbitrary and dated. Special thanks to Yoon Park, our Patreon sponsor, who suggested this video topic, it was fascinating to learn about this unusual situation. Thanks very much for watching!
