We're kicking off spooky season with another installment of ingenue protection squad-- (alternate title: Kat getting really defensive over her Broadway dream roles that other people tend to find really annoying for 16 minutes straight) Today, we're here to defend everyone's (least) favorite blonde girl in a tower waiting for a handsome tenor to rescue her-- Johanna Barker (Turpin?) from Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Sweeney is one of my favorite musicals of all time and I am *dying* to play Johanna. Not just because she gets the pretty music and the pretty dress and the pretty boy-- I think she's awesome and there's so much more to her character than meets the eye. So today, I'm lawyering up (little miss Woods comma Elle style) and coming to the defense of this Sondheim soprano. I'm going to break down why so many people hate Johanna and why she's ~actually~ a hero..... especially by horror movie standards.
