Description: Why on earth does Norway have so many road tunnels? And how many Tunnels are there in Norway? The short answer is 1490+ (depending entirely on how you count the number of tunnels.) When comparing to other countries, I noticed the same tunnels where usually listed twice, because they are bi-tubular tunnels. If you count every new tube, as a new tunnel, you get 1490+ in Norway. If you count a bi-tubular tunnel as one tunnel, you get 1228+. But why the + sign? Because Statens Vegvesen doesn't regulate all the tunnels that are out there. Some tunnels are private, and are not included on the list of tunnels (I found two quite long tunnels like this while randomly scrolling around the map. Source used: vegkart.atlas.vegvesen.no ) And Full disclosure: Statens Vegvesen only mentions "Above 1100" on their written website, as they don't like counting tunnels that are very short. Here's some more tunnel stats: Tunnels over 100m = 940 Tunnels over 500m = 549 Tunnels over 1 Km = 339 Tunnels over 3 Km = 104 Tunnels over 5 Km = 40 Tunnels over 10 Km = 6 (based on the counting method that gives 1228+ tunnels). This is from the 2nd November 2020.
