Given how Pentatonic’s 5-tones make selecting decent notes easy and how it provides note choices that can connect “close-enough” to a keys harmony, Pentatonic creates melody fast. The problem is, it’s one of the most generic scales into note targeting of the backing chords of a progression. This means that the melodic lines from Pentatonic will seldom connect as strongly compared to how an arpeggio or a mode can connect to the backing chords. In this video, we will cover how to perform an arpeggio line directly into a chord and we’ll learn how to use a mode to cover chords that don’t fit with the key signature. By using these tools you can start to build melody lines and solos without always using the generic sound of Pentatonic. Stop your playing to getting too locked-up (for too long) into using only Pentatonic scale. If you don’t stop, you’ll become planted on that scale and find yourself feeling forced and focused on that sound. Arpeggios & modes build better note connection and allow for a better connection to the harmony.
