Description: 15" woofer, 8" midwoofer, 4" midrange and 1" dome tweeter open baffle 4 way speakers! While I can get 3.5 way to work, the 8" midwoofer I have isn't really well suited to open baffle in the bass range, so I'll be going with 4 way. The crossover points will be approximately: 400Hz, 1000Hz, 3000Hz and I'll make adjustments as needed when I'm designing the crossover. Don't know what I was thinking when I said 6000Hz for the midrange to tweeter, since the midrange will start to beam at around 3100Hz. One of the the advantages of a multi-driver speaker is to improve dispersion throughout the full frequency range, and avoid beaming. Beaming is where the sound from the driver tends to narrow into "beam" (like a laser beam) as the frequency goes up. It's related to the diameter of the cone - the bigger the cone, the lower the beaming frequency. For example, the 15" woofer starts to beam at around 900Hz, the 8" at around 1600Hz and the 4" midrange at around 3100Hz. By using 4 drivers to split the frequency range into four bands, you can avoid this problem and greatly improve off-axis response. And having 4 drivers looks cooler, especially if one of those is 15"!
