Description: Learn how to sign in American Sign Language! This video teaches the ASL sign for SIMCOM (SimCom, Sim-Com), which is short for "simultaneous communication". This refers to the act of speaking aloud while signing a signed language -- doing both at the same time. Are you learning ASL? Do NOT try to SimCom. Instead, focus on learning ASL alone -- its unique vocabulary and grammar. Don't try speaking English at the same time. Related videos from Deaf YouTubers I suggest you watch to gain a few perspectives on why SimCom is not recommended [use closed captions!]: -- youtu.be/PEBwwe0PLZ8 (a description of why ASL and English at the same time is simply not possible!) -- youtu.be/pDA_EXFTpxo?t=135 (at 2:15, she notes staying voice-off as a "do", and using SimCom as a "don't") -- youtube.com/watch?v=bmWILCoBonc (explains research demonstrating how SimCom used in presentations/lectures advantages the hearing audience over deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences) -- youtube.com/watch?v=qr2lFaJEh_I (this one is in ASL only -- no captions, but he summarizes how you can't correctly express two languages at once. SimCom diminishes the hard-fought-for recognition of ASL as a language distinct from English, and SimCom should not be used, especially in public / lengthy / video settings.) I explored the concept of Sim-Com in depth in my free email newsletter. Did you miss it? Sign up for free: aslmeredith.com/newsletter
