Description: All oils - safflower oil, canola oil, soybean oil, avocado oil, corn oil, coconut oil, cbd oil, or vegetable oil - regardless of wether it’s extra virgin or refined, is 100% fat. That means that it contains 9 calories for every gram of fat. That’s more than twice as many as the 4 calories per gram of sugar or protein. It is literally the most calorically dense food on the planet. And just to put this all into perspective, 1 tbsp of olive oil has roughly the same amount of calories as 26 olives, 2.25 tbsp of maple syrup, .5 cups of rice, .5 cup of Breyer’s non-dairy vanilla peanut butter - which by the way is amazing, also not sponsored but maybe some day - .75 cups of oatly low fat milk, 1 large banana, 2 heads of broccoli, and 4 cups of fat free popcorn. If you eliminated 1 tbsp of olive oil per day, you could lose about 12 lbs of fat. The FDA put out a statement clarifying that oleic acid, the main fatty acid that is found in olive oil, may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease only when substituted for fats and oils higher in saturated fat. In other words, it may be protective against CVD if you switched from something like butter to olive oil, which has less saturated fat. Likewise, the high content of fruits and vegetables in the Mediterranean diet are most likely what help protect your arteries, not necessarily the olive oil. Furthermore, some studies have shown that olive oil can activate factor 7 almost as much as much as butter. Now factor 7 is a protein which helps clot your blood. This is definitely a good thing when it comes to injuries so you don’t bleed out but when it comes to your arteries it can create a thrombosis and possibly cause a heart attack. Also, since many oils, including olive oil, are high in omega 6 fatty acids, can throw off your omega 6 to omega 3 ratios, which can also cause cardiovascular problems. Western diets are typically a 15:1 omega 6 to omega 3s where you want that to be a 4:1 ratio or lower. Too much fat in the diet can also cause your intramyocellular lipids, which just means the fat in your muscles to increase. This is not a good thing as the fat in your muscles is inversely related to your insulin sensitivity. So the more fat in your muscles, the harder it’ll be to allow your body to use insulin properly so that it can move your blood glucose into the muscles where it needs to be to provide you with energy. This can cause hyperlipidemia and over time, type 2 diabetes. After researching all of this information, it’s so clear as to why Dr. Esselstyn and Dr. Barnard chose to keep oils out of their interventional studies when helping participants reverse coronary artery disease and type 2 diabetes, respectively.
